Before we listened to our speakers, Staunton on Arrow WI elected its new committee for 2017 and Claire Burton was elected President for a further year! We are looking forward to our 70th Anniversary year in 2017.
Claire Burton introduced our speakers Gill Harnett and Gill Clements from Brampton Bryan WI who gave us a short talk about the charity ‘Dress a Girl around the World’ which they have been supporting which makes clothes for girls and boys all around the world who have very few clothes of their own, either through poverty or as a result of disasters. Patterns for the clothing can be downloaded from the charity’s website. Mainly the clothing is fashioned from unwanted pillowcases and other pieces of cotton fabric. This fabric has to withstand being washed in a stream so delicate fabrics are not suitable. They brought along many examples of their work, mainly dresses for girls but they also made t shirts and shorts for boys and explained that the clothes are collected and sent to London to go abroad in a large batch. The seams and pockets are reinforced with home-made bias binding which makes them very strong and sturdy, suitable for children! Vanessa Woodward gave the vote of thanks.
