Some hardy WI singers, their helpers and Father Christmas went around Staunton village and then up to Stansbatch carol singing on Monday 21st December for local charities. Approximately £150 was raised. Several of our members and friends took afternoon tea at the Priory Hotel, Sutton Sugwas just before Christmas. There was an excellent spread of tasty sandwiches and beautiful cakes. As you can imagine it was a very pleasant occasion for all!
Our new President Claire Burton welcomed Nikki Scott from Room of Beauty in Kington. Nikki gave us all a goody bag of samples, and told us about the beauty treatments which she carries out at her salon. Debbie Weaver was the model and Nikki demonstrated how to carry out a complete face make up, along with giving us many tips as she was going along, as well as useful equipment we would need. Sarah Westaby gave the vote of thanks.
We were joined by our speaker Mrs Heather Carrington from Gladestry WI, who gave us a very interesting talk with puzzles to solve afterwards all about particular incidents in her career as a Forensic Scientist. She explained all about collecting and interpreting evidence, not just in order to convict but to rule the suspect out also. We looked at photos and plaster casts. Heather also explained that she had to present evidence in court cases against hostile barristers, and the skill was to make complicated explanations understandable. Gill Busby gave the vote of thanks.
The Harvest Supper was a very successful evening. Mrs Alison Lord thanked everyone who helped by making food, helping with the hall laying tables and decorating and Ann Kent Philips for managing the kitchen, cooking, washing up etc. She apologised that due to a technical glitch the film of Old Hereford could not be shown and it will be arranged for a later date.
