Adam Henson is visiting the county later in the year for a Herefordshire WI event
Our speaker this month was a local friend of ours, Peter Laing. He came to speak about his experience as the veterinary consultant on the BBC 'Countryfile' programme, when Adam Henson followed some of the old droving paths in Mid Wales, driving a flock of geese for 3 days, as if taking them to market. He explained how important it was that the geese remained healthy for the drive, in particular that their feet were in good condition and that their feathers had good waterproofing. This turned out to be very necessary as on the first day, despite being during August, the weather was very wet and stormy. The geese were weighed before they started and when they finished to make sure that they did not lose any weight; in fact they all gained weight! He thoroughly enjoyed the experience with the filming team and it was interesting to find out that what we see on the screen doesn't always correspond with the reality of filming! We also welcomed one visitor, June.
Adam Henson is visiting the county later in the year for a Herefordshire WI event Several of our members have been attending Debbie and Becky's 'Crafternoontea' on a Monday afternoon (1 - 3pm) being held in the hall at Staunton on Arrow. There is tea, coffee and cake for £3 a session and everyone has either been bringing a craft activity to do or has been helping produce a patchwork square. These will all be joined up very shortly to produce a complete log cabin quilt. It has been fun taking part, people are also knitting, crocheting, doing cross stitch and tapestry, and it's also an opportunity to meet new people and chat. Pictures to follow!
On Wednesday 30 January only 2 intrepid members Barbara and Alison braved a short walk up Hergest Ridge. The weather was sunny but the wind was very fierce. After the walk we met up with 5 other members to have a pleasant lunch in the Swan Hotel and Tea Rooms, Kington. We had the 2 course set lunch for £6 which we thought was very reasonable. |
