Four members of our WI made up our quiz team for the Final at Sutton St Nicholas, Alison, Wendy, Vicky and Vanessa. We all enjoyed ourselves as the questions were not too obscure this time and we managed to come third equal out of 14 teams so were very pleased with ourselves. Alison won a raffle prize as well! Thanks to all for taking part so willingly.
Two teams from Staunton on Arrow WI entered the quiz and Staunton on Arrow Team B came 5th, thus qualifying for the final on 23 March 2018!
Claire Burton welcomed our friend Dr Joanna Raven to speak to us and show us slides about: ‘The challenges of childbirth overseas from Hereford shire to Hithadhoo’. She has a Phd in ‘Heath systems and maternal health’ and originally trained as a nurse then as a midwife; she now is a senior lecturer in Liverpool. Her work overseas has taken her to VSO in the Maldives, Uganda, Vietnam, China, India and Sri Lanka. We learnt some shocking statistics; approximately 830 women die every day as a result of pregnancy or childbirth. Almost all of these deaths occur in low resource settings (half of them in Africa) and most could have been prevented. Lack of trained health personnel in urban and rural settings, geography, poverty, lack of funds, lack of information and cultural practices all need to be addressed before these figures can be lowered. We found her talk very interesting and thought provoking. Debbie Weaver gave the vote of thanks.
Debbie Weaver and Rebecca Bissell attended Dilwyn WI's special Easter making and tasting evening. Below are pictures of items that were made on the evening.
