The meeting in July was a very interesting visit to The Old Forge, Dilwyn where Marion Wilcocks demonstrated spinning ‘From Fleece to Jumper’. She showed us her spinning and weaving machines and many items she had made and hand dyed using natural dyes. Our President Claire Burton gave the vote of thanks. The demonstration was followed by a quiche and salad supper with optional dessert and drinks. Our meeting in June was an outing to Owen Mabbort’s Forge Workshop at Shirlheath. We shared cars to the Forge, meeting at the hall at 7pm. Owen gave us a short introduction to his training at Hereford College and then demonstrated with explanations the making of an ornamental poker in mild steel. He also showed us examples of other work he has done. Owen has recently been involved making the bronze door furniture to the grand entrance of New Place, Stratford-Upon-Avon – the site of William Shakespeare’s home, run by the Shakespeare’s Birth Place Trust, including a huge knocker and 300 nails for the door. Our President Claire Burton gave the vote of thanks. The demonstration was followed by refreshments served by Cath Mabbort and her mother.
The meeting opened with a time of silence to remember our Treasurer and ex-Secretary Mrs Ann Kent Phillips who died very suddenly on Monday 13 June. We will miss her greatly in our WI. A sympathy letter had been sent to the family. |
