In August a group of members and friends, including 2 visitors from Brimfield WI, our partner WI this year, had a very interesting and informative visit to Envirosort just outside Worcester run by Severn Waste Services to learn what happens to all those recyclable items we put into our green wheelie bins. The size of the operation was amazing and we could see most of the operations from a raised viewing area. We were very surprised that the huge warehouse did not smell at all, it was just very dusty. We could see all the materials being sorted out, plastic and paper being baled, and HGV’s arriving to take the goods onto reprocessors. One useful thing we learnt was not to leave the tops on plastic bottles when they go into the bins as the plastic bottles are baled and then compressed and the lids shoot off at high speed with a loud bang! On our way to Envirosort we had a very pleasant lunch at Laylocks Garden Centre, just outside Worcester on the A44, which also gave us the opportunity to do a little shopping.
